Purple Packard
original watercolor, 29 x 21
My brother always told me when I got as good as
he was, I'd be able to paint cars, which were his specialty. I always
preferred organic shapes and never had an interest in cars, but
this was such a dramatic angle, how could it not become a painting?
By the time I painted this, I'd given up on trying to ever make
anything the color it really was, and enjoyed instead a game of
seeing how many "wrong" colors I could throw in a thing
and get away with it. This painting won Best of Show at an exhibit
in Snohomish, Washington. I think its success had something to do
with the fact that a lot of people had come to see the adjoining
classic car show, and more or less accidentally found themselves
looking at paintings and being asked to vote. Mine, I think, was
the only car painting. Pretty smart, huh?
