Bar and Grill

original watercolor/acrylic, 23.5 x 17

Most people think the license plate says Barn Girl and they're happy with that. It makes them think she's a pampered old girl who doesn't see much of the road anymore. They're surprised to find out I had something artsy-fartsier in mind: I named the painting after two of the most striking elements: the prominent grill and the horizontal bar of the bumper. If it came out of the mat, its horizontal orientation would become more obvious, but I felt the tilt was more dynamic, so that's how I framed it. This painting was part of a regional juried show at the Frye Art Gallery in Seattle, back in the days when I put more effort into doing such things as entering shows.
